New tools and technologies, both for building design and construction, have come to assist architects in the creation of buildings that produce their own energy and which consume less of it. Renewable energy production strategies are necessary in order to mitigate the issue of future energy security, as traditional sources of fuel become increasingly scarce.&nbsp; This project presents a proposal for a building that can produce power by incorporating a photovoltaic and thermal energy collection system as a programmed design component, offering an architectural solution to what is typically viewed as an engineering problem. At the time of its establishment 120 brothers resided within the facility. Presently a dozen brothers are still living and studying on-site, the remainder reside off-site elsewhere in the city. The way the facility functions has changed dramatically over time, and accordingly several renovations and additions have altered the building’s initial form. The DUC has held a civil university charter since 1967, offering a full range of academic programs within the faculties of philosophy and theology. In 2012 the DUC became affiliated with Carleton University, introducing further changes to the current and future use of the facility. The self-sustaining system offers a means by which greenhouse vegetables and aquaculture can be harvested and stored both terrestrially and aquatically with minimal need for heavy equipment and servicing, contributing factors to the exorbitant cost of living in the north.Deployed aquatically and installed along coastal areas, the design proposal offers a semi-permanent solution that facilitates the creation of new transportation corridors along current and future shipping routes in the surrounding waters. The primary design exploration focused on the skin of the structure which not only serves to control its interior climate, but also offers the potential to harvest renewable sources of energy that satisfy its demand for electricity. The system receives power from the sun, with solar film integrated into the intermediate layer of skin. Further potential exists to harvest tidal energy within the aquatic component. Redundancy of structure and automation in deployment were primary concerns, therefore the envelope is designed as multiple layers of flexible material that allow it to be self-supporting, while containing its interior pressure and maintaining the shape of its space. Its steeple is visible from blocks away along the winding avenue on which it fronts. The broad and shallow property is bound by four roads, sloping gently to the northeast. Proposed are five new buildings, complementary to the character of both the existing church and site, yet distinct in their function as contemporary homes for urban dwellers. Our proposal is the result of an interdisciplinary effort by a group of two architects and two engineers while students at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, respectively. Situated adjacent to a former airfield, the design capitalizes on the site’s exposure to natural elements. The proposal maximizes energy efficiency, optimizes occupant comfort and reduces dependency on both the grid as well as the municipal water supply by integrating design strategies in energy efficiency, water efficiency, and design innovation.
